Founded in 1960, the Houston Oilers were an original member of the American Football League (AFL). The team quickly rose to prominence, winning two AFL championships in 1960 and 1961, before joining the NFL as part of the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.

Over the years, the Oilers boasted a number of legendary players who helped the team achieve success on the field. These included quarterback Warren Moon, wide receiver Bill "Thunder" Thornton, and running back Earl Campbell, who won the NFL Most Valuable Player Award in 1979.
